Kaua‘i Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. has pledged his support to try and bring the Chad Owens Football Camp back next year, said Tina Albao, a Kaua‘i coordinator.
More than 90 of Kaua‘i’s aspiring football players gathered at the New Kapa‘a Town Park for a day-long camp headed by Chad Owens, former University of Hawai‘i standout and currently with the National Football League.
Owens said he felt the camp was a huge success and wants to bring it back year after year, Albao said, noting that he suggested “maybe with pads next year,” an idea that was met with overwhelming approval by the attending campers.
Albao said each of the children received a camp t-shirt, lunch where they got to eat alongside the camp coaches, and other motivational tools.
The camp was led by Owens and Chris Teves who got help from the Kaua‘i High School football team with coaches Derek Borrero, Mike Tresler and Mel Parcels.
Teves was the lead person for the camp and got help from the Kapa‘a Pop Warner Association, the Lihu‘e Pop Warner Association, Teddy and Pam Arroyo, Lilane and Rafael Corpuz, Sean Andrade and Cory Aguano.
Albao said not everything was football as the coaches took time out to do a comical dance session to a Michael Jackson number, trying to compete with the Aloha Dance Studio that performed several exhibition performances during the lunch break.
Albao said the kids were so enthused about what they learned at camp they wanted to do it again, next weekend.
Albao said she felt the camp was a success and will “most likely be back next year.”
