The Kaua‘i Community College 45th Annual Commencement motto is “Sustainability is Good: Self-reliance is Better,” showing a strong alignment of students, faculty and staff. Keynote speaker Ben Sullivan grew up on a river in the woods of Massachusetts and first came to Kaua‘i when he was 19. He attained a degree in environmental design from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1995. He is a husband, father, gardener, architect, writer, activist and dedicated member of the Kaua‘i community. The focus of his work is in helping to seek a transition from global to local for Kaua‘i. Student speakers are Kahakuali‘i Ka‘imina‘auao, a candidate for an associate’s in arts degree, and U‘ilani Corr-Yorkman, a candidate for a master’s degree in education technology. Ka‘imina‘auao, a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the two-year-college international honor society, will be continuing his studies at St. Cloud State University, Minn. Corr-Yorkman, a Kamehameha graduate, is currently teaching at Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School. She received an associate’s degree in liberal arts at KCC as well as a bachelor’s degree in elementary education through KCC and UH Manoa’s distance-education program. She is looking forward to using her newly earned degree and education to bring new technology ideas into traditional classrooms.

This educational summer program for children is a fun and instructive, three-session program using classroom activities, individual group projects and arts and crafts, guest speakers and creative projects to teach children about care and humane responsibilities towards animals. A large part of the daily curriculum will include hands-on interaction of the society shelter animals, particularly daily training of shelter dogs and socializing cats. Various ways animals communicate and behave both in the wild and in human homes will be explored. Studies will include how daily actions can impact the fragile island. Critter Camp has openings for students entering third to fifth grades and will meet 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday from June 21 to June 25 or July 5 to July 9. Extended care will be offered. Hawai‘i Children’s Theatre is celebrating its 10th Summer Stars anniversary with an action-packed line-up of programs. Under the direction of HCT veteran Jennifer Downs, each program offers stimulating work and multiple-performance opportunities. With a returning staff of theater professionals, plus workshop leaders who represent top artists and educators in their field, this landmark summer promises to be the best yet.
