NAWILIWILI — Kaua‘i County Council members constantly deal with ordinances to improve the island’s ability to sustain itself regarding oil dependence.
So it’s a no-brainer that council members would ask for more involvement in Kaua‘i’s plan for a slow weaning from off-island energy sources.
Resolution 2010-35 requests the mayor to consider including the council in the implementation of the Kaua‘i Energy Sustainability Plan.
“I read this resolution as a request to the administration to continue to collaborate with the council on the recommendations of the energy-sustainability plan,” Councilman Tim Bynum said. “I think that’s wise.”
Bynum said the plan will require the administration’s involvement, and probably some legislation created by the council.
“We’ve gone through a process that we should certainly follow up and collaborate going forward,” he said.
Council Vice Chair Jay Furfaro took leadership in assigning tasks to different council members, based on his management experience.
Furfaro last week suggested the council defer the resolution bill for two weeks so other council members would have more time to pursue assigned tasks.
“I don’t think there’s a big, mad rush to approve this,” said Chair Kaipo Asing, addressing Furfaro’s request. “We can defer it until such time you are comfortable.”
The council unanimously voted defer the resolution to the June 9 meeting.
