LIHU‘E — Officials with the Kaua‘i Fire Department are reminding residents that they need to get a permit from the fire department by July 1 if they plan to light firecrackers on the Fourth of July.
The hours that firecrackers may be ignited are from 1 to 9 p.m. on July 4. Stores will start selling fireworks on Tuesday, a county news release states.
Applications are available at KFD headquarters located in the Hale Pumehana building, 3083 Akahi St. suite 101, in Lihu‘e. The office is open weekdays, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except on holidays and furlough days, e.g. July 2.
The cost of a fireworks permit is $25, and it can be used to purchase up to 5,000 non-aerial individual firecracker units. There is no limit on the number of permits an individual can obtain to buy firecrackers; however, applicants must be at least 18 years old to be issued a permit.
Although the following items are classified as fireworks, no permit is required to purchase them — snakes, sparklers, fountains, cylindrical or cone fountains, whistles, toy smoke devices, wheels and ground spinners, and other similar products.
Capt. David Bukoski with the Fire Prevention Bureau advises everyone to exercise caution when igniting fireworks.
“We’re going through a very dry period right now so it’s particularly important that fireworks are handled safely,” said Bukoski. “People should follow the instructions that come with the fireworks and adults should supervise youngsters at all times.”
