PUHI — Groundbreaking for a new pavilion adjacent to the YMCA pool is scheduled for this fall, said Tom Tannery, director of the YMCA of Kaua‘i.
The pavilion got a boost from A&B Hawai‘i when Trinette Kaui of A&B Properties was joined by Cyle Damasco of Kaua‘i Commercial and Marty Amaro of the Kaua‘i Coffee Company, all A&B subsidiaries, in presenting the YMCA of Kaua‘i with a grant to help with the pavilion.
Tannery said with all of the summer activities taking place, he will hold off on the pavilion groundbreaking until right after summer and hopes the pavilion will be ready for use by the end of the year.
“We need the shade,” Tannery said. “During the swim meets, the dive classes, and water polo, there is very little shade.”
In addition to providing shade, Tannery said the 1,500-square foot covered pavilion will have bar-b-ques, sinks and should provide an ideal place for community gatherings.
Pat Childs, in accepting the contribution from A&B Hawai‘i, said A&B has always been a strong supporter of the YMCA, dating back to the days of Camp Naue.
Currently, a framework for tenting sits on the site where the covered pavilion will occupy.
“These tents work,” Tannery said. “The only problem is the pipes rust fast.”
