LIHU‘E — Avoiding a negligent-homicide charge, Jeremy Ikaika Dang, 28, of Kalaheo, was sentenced to six months in jail for leaving the scene of an accident involving death or serious injury.
His vehicle hit Jamieson Cosier, 24, of Kalaheo, a pedestrian who had been walking along Koloa Road near the intersection of Blackstad Road in Lawa‘i in 2007.
Cosier died around two weeks later at The Queen’s Medical Center on O‘ahu.
Dang was also sentenced to five years probation by 5th Circuit Judge Randal Valenciano on June 10 at the state courthouse in Lihu‘e.
He was originally charged with third-degree negligent homicide and third-degree promotion of a detrimental drug, those charges being dropped in exchange for his guilty plea March 11 on the charge of leaving the scene of an accident involving death or serious injury.
Michael Soong represented Dang. John Murphy, county deputy prosecuting attorney, represented the state.
Early on the morning of Nov. 24, 2007, a white Nissan sports car driven by Dang struck Cosier, according to a county press release issued shortly after the incident.
Dang was arrested in March 2009 and charged with third-degree negligent homicide, third-degree promotion of a detrimental drug, and leaving the scene of an accident involving death or serious injury, a class B felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
He was arraigned in March 2009 and pleaded not guilty, according to court records.
