LIHU‘E — Get Fit Kaua‘i on Monday announced its breakfast kickoff event to launch the island-wide Worksite Wellness Challenge called “We’re on the Road to Wellness.”
The event kicks off with a breakfast hosted by Get Fit Kaua‘i and the Worksite Wellness Task Force from 7:30 to 9 a.m., June 22, at Gaylord’s, a news release states.
Bev Brody, coordinator for Get Fit Kaua‘i, said, “The Worksite Wellness Task Force, headed by Rose Murtagh of Wilcox Hospital has done a fabulous job of getting our first group of businesses involved in an inaugural competition. The breakfast is just the beginning. All of our worksite wellness participants are also encouraged to participate in the upcoming Mayor-a-thon on June 26 at Kapa‘a Beach Park.”
The Worksite Wellness Task Force established a competition to determine which of the participating companies can make the most healthy improvements in the next six months. Each participating company has a Worksite Wellness Task Force Coach to help determine what nutritional and activity based changes can be made permanently.
“What we are striving for in this competition is permanent policy changes regarding increased nutrition and physical activity in the workplace,” Brody said in the release. “We have created a ‘perpetual’ trophy of a bronzed running shoe which will be awarded to the company who can make the most change. This year we have a handful of companies participating including KIUC, KCC, Wilcox-KMC, Sheraton, County of Kaua‘i, Department of Health and couple more still pending. We hope for much greater participation next year. But this is a great start.”
The Worksite Wellness Challenge Breakfast will help each company develop a competitive plan to win the “perpetual” trophy which will be awarded in January after completing a post assessment in December. Get Fit Kaua‘i is part of the Nutritional and Physical Activity Coalition of Kaua‘i, a project from University of Hawai‘i. Additional Task Forces such as Built Environment, Safe Routes for School, and Access to Healthy Foods are part of the overall plan to improve infrastructure, safety, and more choice to improve nutrition and physical activity, the release says.
