Kaua‘i Chamber of Commerce 2nd Quarter Membership Meeting
The Kaua‘i Chamber of Commerce will have its 2nd Quarter General Membership Meeting on June 17 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Kaua‘i Beach Resort, a news release states.
Alexander & Baldwin and Kukui‘ula Development Company will provide updates on the company’s Kaua‘i subsidiaries including Kukui’ula Development Company Hawai‘i, A&B Properties, Inc., Kaua‘i Coffee Company, Matson Navigation and Kaua‘i Commercial Company.
A&B Inc. began as a partnership between two young men, Samuel Thomas Alexander and Henry Perrine Baldwin with the purchase of 12 acres in Maui for $110, has grown into a corporation with $2.5 billion in assets. After the passing of the founders, Alexander & Baldwin continued to expand their sugar operations by acquiring additional land, developing essential water resources and investing in shipping to bring supplies to Hawai‘i and transport sugar to the U.S. Mainland markets. These land and water resources, originally acquired for agricultural purposes, would eventually become the foundation of A&B’s strength and success today in transportation, real estate and agribusiness.
In addition to the updates by the A&B companies, the Chamber will also present the 2010 Golf Scholarship Tournament Recipients including Kristen Lazaro (Kapa’a High School), Taran Tani (Kaua‘i High School), Jillian Yamase (Waimea High School) and Elika Sakazai (Kaua‘i Community College). The recipients will continue their education in the field of business and plan to eventually return to Kaua‘i to have a career in business. The Chamber especially thanks the 2010 Golf Scholarship Tournament Platinum Sponsor, Earthworks Pacific and the many, many Chamber members and friends who sponsored Golf Holes, donated prizes, sponsored a team and or played in the tournament. Additionally, the Chamber thanks the volunteers of the Golf Committee including Co-Chairs Sam Pratt and Tom Canute, committee members and volunteers who provided musubis, sandwiches and assisted in the check-in on the day of the tournament as well as during the awards luncheon.
To make an on-line reservation and or learn more about the Kaua‘i Chamber of Commerce, visit www.kauaichamber.org. or call 245-7363. The Chamber member fee for the dinner is $48, $58 after June 10 and $68 for Guests/At the door.
Hawai‘i offering grants for electric car charging
HONOLULU — Hawai‘i’s government is seeking grant applications from businesses and nonprofits that want to install electric car charging equipment.
The Hawai‘i Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism said Wednesday its grant program has $3 million available to prepare the state for electric vehicles.
The money comes from federal stimulus funds specifically dedicated for use with Hawai‘i’s energy program.
Energy Program Administrator Ted Peck says the grant program is intended to help Hawai‘i establish the infrastructure needed to support electric vehicles that are expected to begin arriving later this year.
The deadline for applications is July 26.
