Gates to the First Annual Rudy Ramos Independence Day Races will open at 10 a.m., Saturday and Sunday at the Kaua‘i Raceway Park in Mana.
Hosted by the Garden Island Racing Association, the two-day drag races will feature door slammers and dragsters being shipped here from the Outer Islands for two days of bracket racing.
Richard Nishimura of O‘ahu will have his wheel-standing ‘71 El Camino named “Ruff & Ready,” and Charles Ramalia of O‘ahu will have his Bone Shaker Nissan truck, while Darryl Agliam of the Big Island will have his ‘86 Toyota “Hot Steppa” mixing in with the Kaua‘i field, said Kerrilyn Villa of the GIRA.
In addition to the adult racers, there are Junior Dragsters vying for July 4th race honors from O‘ahu and Maui racing against their Kaua‘i counterparts.
Saturday has been designated the Junior Dragster Challenge with a flag procession by the Air Cadets during the dinner break, scheduled for 6 to 7 p.m.
Sunday’s festivities include a tribute to Rudy Ramos where racers, crew and family will ride down the track side-by-side, followed by the presentation of the Sportsman of the Year award, the Geico Safety Award for the crew and pit with the best safety practices, the King of the Track award, and the State Championship.
Timed trials for both days run from 1 to 6 p.m. with bracket racing to start from 7 p.m.
The Rudy Ramos tribute parade will take place from 7 to 8 p.m., Sunday, followed by bracket racing.
Admission is $12 for adults each day. Children 12 and under are admitted free.
There will be food concessions, GIRA merchandise and a limited edition Rudy Ramos Independence Day Race T-shirt available.
