LIHU‘E — The Kupale Women’s Assault Prevention Program offers practical and easy ways to avoid or escape adverse situations, states a press release.
A course is set June 20 from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Kaua‘i Athletic Club in Lihu‘e.
The assault-prevention class is taught annually on Kaua‘i. Over 7,000 women have taken this course. No martial-arts skills are required.
The Kupale School of Women’s Assault Prevention and Domestic Safety is an award-winning, condensed course and has been in continuous presentation at martial-art schools, community recreation centers, senior-citizen centers, hospitals, real-estate companies, banks, university dorms and for special-needs groups.
Using the latest statistics from the FBI and state of Hawai‘i crimes against women, this is a course developed without martial arts or unnecessary fighting. Instructor is Steve McLaughlin, chief executive officer of the Hawai‘i Zenyo Jujitsu Kai, who has taught traditional jujitsu to adult students in Nu‘uanu at the Dai Jingju Temple for over 15 years. McLaughlin is an eighth-degree black belt with 38 years teaching experience, and is founding instructor of this course.
Participants must pre-register and pre-pay before the class at Kupale.org or by calling 1-808-595-7175.
A second course in underwater jujitsu and water safety is also being offered June 20 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the YMCA swimming pool in Puhi, for $75. Sponsored by Hawai‘i Zenyo Jujitsu Kai, the course is for all divers, surfers, lifeguards, paddlers and rescue professionals who want to add some martial arts to their water time.
