KAPA‘A — Kennison Nagahisa, head coach of the Kawaihau Community Little League Majors All-Stars feels good about this year’s team heading into the 2010 District 1 Major Tournament.
“We’ve got some good boys that can swing the bat,” Nagahisa said. “There’ll be some balls going over the fence. The boys also play well together and if they can get inspired by the achievement of the Minors, we’ll be good.”
Kawaihau hosts the District tournament with two games scheduled starting Friday at the New Kapa‘a Town Park Main Diamond adjacent to the football stadium.
Kailua, whom Nagahisa considers to be a strong contender in the district, will open against Kaneohe, another perennial strong team, starting at 1 p.m.
That game will be followed by Kahalu‘u and Kainalu squaring off, with the first pitch being scheduled for 4 p.m.
Kawaihau, the tournament host, enjoys a bye until 10 a.m., Saturday when it faces the winner of the Kailua/Kaneohe matchup.
The District 1 championship will be settled at 4 p.m., Tuesday.
“These are good boys,” said one of the coaches assisting with practice, Tuesday afternoon. “They have good gloves and are quick. When you combine them with the hitting, they should be okay.”
“There are at least five solid pitchers among the team, too. Even if you have to pull someone to pitch, they can cover each other.”
Bob Kawamoto returns as the Tournament Director with Fred Hackbarth serving as the Assistant Tournament Director. Norman Aweau is the Umpire Consultant and Richard Ota will coordinate the umpires. Chad Rausch is the president of the host Kawaihau Community Little League program and Paul Okuhara will be the Safety Officer.
