LIHU‘E — James Agcaoili and his mother Gloria Agcaoili were on their way home to Koloa after selling goods at a Hanalei farmers market on June 1. It’s a trip they had made countless times before.
On this day, though, a visitor from New Jersey heading westbound on Kuhio Highway apparently crossed the center line, hitting the car driven by James Agcaoili head-on.
James Agcaoili, 38, survived the crash, and is recovering at home under the care of his brothers.
Funeral services for Gloria Agcaoili, 70, are Friday and Saturday.
The day after the fatal crash, Kaua‘i Police Department officers arrested Wayne D. Siegel, 47, of Marlboro, N.J., for first-degree negligent homicide. He was released pending further investigation.
A Monday phone call placed to his residence seeking comment was not returned.
As the KPD investigation continues, Agcaoili family members aren’t able to get their hands on any police report on the accident, being told that it could be several weeks before the investigation is done and any police report is made available.
While sadness engulfs the Agcaoili household in Koloa, there will be no further action taken against Siegel until the investigation is completed.
Darryl Perry, KPD chief, said in an e-mail Monday that the investigation continues, therefore media inquiries and requests for information surrounding the case will not be responded to at this time, “to protect both the victims and accused.”
Gloria Agcaoili is the seventh Kauaian to die on island roads this year; the first since mid-March.
Through the end of June last year there were five road fatalities on the island, and for 2009 there were eight, the lowest total in the last five years.
Gloria Robles Agcaoili was born June 28, 1939, in San Simon, Bacarra, Philippines. She was a vendor at various farmers markets. See page A9 for her complete obituary.
