The Kaua‘i Sports Camp for children ages 6 to 12 will be held mornings the first and second weeks of July. The first camp is July 5 to July 9 at Kalawai Park in Kalaheo. The second camp is at Kapa‘a New Park July 12 to July 16. Both camps run from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. with registration starting at 8:30 a.m. Instruction in soccer, basketball and cheerleading will be offered. Camp participants will receive camp T-shirts, daily snacks, drinks, lunch and more. Campers should bring sunscreen, hat and sportswear. Cost is $30. There are partial and full scholarships available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The Sports Camp is hosted by Kaua‘i churches together with the UW Sports Ministry, which is a sports-resource ministry from Colorado Springs, Colo. This ministry helps develop sports programs geared toward children across the United States and in foreign nations including China and Korea.

Nyla Fujii-Babb, one of Hawaii’s premier storytellers, is a featured performer for the 2010 Hawai‘i State Public Library System Children’s Summer Reading Program at selected public libraries on Kaua‘i. Admission is free. Fujii-Babb will present “Blue Water, Blue Waves,” a collection of island stories and songs, in celebration of this year’s program theme “Make a Splash @ Your Library.” Fujii-Babb has been a professional storyteller, artistic director, puppeteer and actress for more than 20 years. In October 2000, Fujii-Babb was selected to perform as a featured teller at the prestigious National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough, Tenn. In addition, she is a retired children’s librarian of the HSPLS.
The 45-minute program is suitable for ages 6 and older. All children must be accompanied by parents or caregivers.
