LIHU‘E — Fragrant in the front yard and whimsical in the back, Carol Yasutake, the purveyor of all this beauty, is the June winner the Wailua-Kapa‘a Neighborhood Association’s Neighborhood Pride award, states a press release. This is the second winner in this neighborhood built of Hicks Homes. The first was Noni Smythe in October. Yasutake and her husband Les bought on Ahele Drive in Wailua Homesteads in 1977 and have been working in the yard ever since.
The front parkway is dominated by plumeria trees, orchids, Staghorn fern and other vines. A landscape architect by training, she has flowers blooming year-round. There are outdoor canvas oil paintings, pottery, water features, drift wood sculptures and a rock that took a bull dozer to place on the property.
She owns part of the ‘Opaeka‘a Stream which is home to about 26 koi she feeds daily.
She claims nothing has “rhyme or reason,” but she did try to think about colors when she put it all together.
Yasutake will receive her framed certificate at the association’s monthly meeting at 2 p.m. Saturday at Kapa‘a Public Library.
The monthly meeting held the fourth Saturday of each month is free and open to the public.
The Neighborhood Pride Committee is seeking nominations for beautiful front yards in the 96746 ZIP code. Suggestions can be e-mailed to helena1824@aol.com, or call 822-1885. The only criteria is the resident must do the work themselves.
