‘OMA‘O — The sound of thunder filled the air of ‘Oma‘o on a semi-soggy morning made for great racing this Father’s Day at the first Mark Nobrega Memorial motorcycle races.
Event coordinator Bertram Almeida — along with race promoters Garden Island Motorcycle Club and Kaua‘i Moto X Riders Association — built a demanding, technical dirt bike track.
The motocross course featured tight turns, elevation drops and straight-aways with enough room for passing at high speeds.
The enduro, single-track trails rolled through the Kahili foothills, offering a difficult ride over rocks and stumps, around trees and under low branches, and up deep-rutted hills several stories tall.
Four classes raced with different-sized bikes and quads.
Experts raced in teams of two riders and ran the entire course for three hours.
Intermediates raced in teams and ran most of the course for two hours.
Novice class ran the Moto X track for 1.5 hours.
Keiki under 12 years old raced on the Moto X track for 45 minutes.
Quads ran the Moto X track for 1.5 hours.
Almeida gave a “big mahalo” to the staff, volunteers and donors who made the event possible.
