LIHU‘E — The calm and serenity that is typically the norm for Hanalei might be put on hold briefly, as Saturday is sure to be a much more eventful and boisterous day at the beach.
A number of events will all be falling on the final day of July, causing enough of a stir that the documentary series “One Square Mile” has contacted the Namolokama Canoe Club to inform them of its intent to record the goings on around Hanalei Pier.
Namolokama will be getting the day started with its 4th Annual Hanalei Open Water Swim.
The events to be held will be a keiki swim to the end of the pier with an 8 and Under division and a 9- to 12-year-old division, as well as a half-mile swim, a one-mile swim and a two-mile swim.
All keiki and adult participants can register online at namolokama.com, by locating the forms at health clubs, surf and bike shops, or by calling 826-7585.
Late registration will still be available beginning at 7 a.m. Saturday morning at the pier, with the events scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
The festivities brought in 160 swimmers last year and Namolokama is hoping to up that number to 200 this time around.
Also getting underway at 9 a.m. will be the Kaua‘i Junior Lifeguard championships at the Hanalei Pavilion.
The competition will feature competitors who have participated in at least one of the previous week-long programs, one last week at Hanalei and Po‘ipu, the other this week at Kalapaki Beach.
The Kaua‘i program is currently the six-time defending state champion and Kaua‘i will host this year’s Hawai‘i championships at Kalapaki Beach on Aug. 14.
The day’s competition, which will determine who will compete for the seventh straight Kaua‘i championship, is set to run until 2 p.m.
A bit later in the morning, the Inaugural Hanalei Sand Castle/Sand Art Contest will be happening to the left of the pier. Beginning at 11 a.m., all are invited to the free event to build or view the sand art on display.
A free lesson will be given by sand sculptor Jeff Peterson at 11:30, followed by a full afternoon of building opportunity in five different competitive divisions.
Prizes from numerous local businesses including gift certificates, t-shirts, hats and more will be distributed.
Participants are asked to bring their own shovels, pails, tools, molds and sprayers, along with any other necessities for a day at the beach.
Final judging is set for 3:30 p.m. with the awards ceremony to follow at 4 p.m.
Later in the day, the Hanalei Canoe Club is holding its annual luau at the clubhouse, beginning at 4:30 p.m.
The fundraiser will provide food, entertainment, hula and a silent auction.
