LIHU‘E — Frances “Aunty Hali‘a” Frazier, an island living treasure and noted translator of Hawaiian-language documents, is now also the subject of a new memoir penned by Kapa‘a author Dawn F. Kawahara.
Frazier on Tuesday celebrated her 96th birthday surrounded by family and close friends, and shared her birthday supper celebration with another man whose birthday is July 6, David Spier, in Anahola.
“Hali‘a of Hawai‘i, A Legacy of Language,” will soon be the subject of a book-signing event at Borders Books Music & Movies at Kukui Marketplace in Lihu‘e, said Kawahara in a press release.
Frazier received the Kaua‘i Museum’s living treasure distinction in 2004 for her contributions to Hawai‘i and Kaua‘i.
A well-known translator of Hawaiian-language land deeds and documents and award-winning books — including “The True Story of Kaluaiko‘olau,” and “Kamehameha and His Warrior Kekauhaupi‘o,” Frazier’s life has spanned through territorial to statehood days in Hawai‘i.
The author and the late Harold Frazier, a civil engineer, wed in 1938 and shared a long, happy and adventurous marriage.
Frazier’s newly-published memoir of their lives together and her rediscovery of her Hawaiian blood legacy and work as a respected translator, is being distributed in Hawai‘i by Kawahara’s TropicBird Press of Kaua‘i.
The book features an added bonus of her father Capt. Richard Nelson’s account of sea travel between islands during the “sugar days,” and is now available at stores and libraries, museums and specialty shops, and through Amazon Books and AuthorHouse on the web.
