‘ANINI – The body of a 52-year-old Kilauea man was found about a half mile off of ‘Anini Beach at around 10:45 Tuesday morning.
No foul play is suspected, a county news release states.
Family and friends reported to authorities late Monday night that the man had gone kayaking and had not returned.
The search for the Kilauea man began at around 11 p.m. Monday, the release says.
Three Hanalei firefighters searched the shoreline around ‘Anini, while two firefighters climbed to a vantage point and utilized thermal imagery in their search.
The search and rescue operation continued until 3 a.m.
At daybreak, the incoming crew of Hanalei firefighters resumed the operation, conducting visual scans of the horizon and shoreline searches. Air-1 joined in the search at around 8:30 a.m., the release says.
Fifteen minutes later, firefighters spotted a kayak about six miles off of ‘Anini Beach. Randan-1 and Zodiac-1 were called to assist with retrieving the kayak, and the search for the Kilauea man continued. He was located about two hours later.
