NAWILIWILI — Heartbeat, a Corel 45, took the whole shot, Friday in the Nawiliwili Yacht Club Kaua‘i Channel Race.
Owned by Ed McDowell and skippered by James McDowell, Heartbeat made the crossing from Ko Olina, O‘ahu to Nawiliwili Harbor in an elapsed sail of 8:37:47 and corrected out to 9:01:28 PHRF for overall honors as well as topping Class A.
After leaving Ko Olina at 7 a.m., the crossing stopped the clocks in Nawiliwili at 3:37 p.m., almost an hour ahead of the second overall finisher Maitri, a J65 out of KYC and skippered by Paul Reid.
The grouping between second and fourth finishes happened within 30 minutes of each other, Maitri crossing on an elapsed sail of 9:26:39, followed by Trois Amis at 9:40:13 and Kalewa, an NYC cat, at 9:51:16.
But despite those fast times, the PHRF corrections put Trois Amis, a Kaufman 12 meter skippered by Frederic Berg, in third with a 10:06:46 PHRF, followed by Maitri in fourth at 10:29:37 PHRF.
Kalewa, a Custom 50 cat piloted by Kevin Millet corrected out to 10:30:41 for second place to Malihini in the Multi class.
Malihini, the Custom 35 cat skippered by Doug Gibson and a familiar sight in the NYC Harbor Series, made the crossing on an elapsed sail of 10:47:22 and corrected out to 9:10:57 PHRF for first in the Multi class.
Fast Company, an Olson 30 that is also a familiar sight in the NYC Harbor Series, was piloted by Ron Wagner and finished on an elapsed sail of 12:41:45, crossing as daylight slipped away. She corrected to 10:58:49 for top honors in Class B over Puanani, a Beneteau 39 out of KYC, that had Ken Dorland and the NYC Race Committee scratching heads wondering where the boat was as the sun slipped below the mountains.
Puanani made the crossing on a 15:05 elapsed sail, the last of 11 craft to cross the line, and corrected to 11:29:31 PHRF for second in Class B.
Prima Donna, a Tripp 40 out of HYC piloted by Dee Darby, finished fifth overall on a 10:14:52 elapsed sail, but corrected to 9:15:49 PHRF for second place in Class A under Heartbeat.
Cazan (11:49:55 elapsed, 10:38:08 PHRF), Buzz Off (11:39:18 elapsed, 10:46:45 PHRF), and On the Edge (11:23:14 elapsed, 10:54:36 PHRF) rounded out Class A standings.
Following this Kaua‘i Channel Race, the NYC women get their opportunity behind the wheel when the Wahine Series starts its three-race series, Aug. 12.
