LIHU‘E — One of the more exciting aspects of this year’s Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau Fair is the Open Judging taking place, Aug. 28, starting at 12:30 p.m.
Lenore Klass, chair of the Home Economics phase of the annual farm fair, said the Open Judging allows people to view the judging aspects of an entry.
This year, people can enter a Single Crust Dessert Pie. Participants need to pre-enter on Aug. 26 when all other entries will be accepted. The entry for Open Judging will be brought to the fair on Aug. 28.
More details are available in the fair’s “General Information and Rules” which Klass considers a must-have for people entering items for consideration in the Home Economics show.
These rules are available at the Univesity of Hawai‘i Extension Services, Room 210 in the state building in Lihu‘e.
Klass, who recently earned the Jif Award in the national Pillsbury baking contest, said there are lots of ways people can earn ribbons and cash prizes for their creative efforts.
Some of the areas people can enter include a Just for Juniors category created for the young people. At the focal point of this class is the Lego competition where juniors design an original project utilizing Legos. There is a limit of one entry per person and no kits are allowed.
Jewelry is another area where people can create a piece of jewelry — a pin, necklace, bracelet, or other jewelry object of the creator’s choosing. Again, there is a limit of one entry per person, and no kits are allowed.
In the Recycle Arts and Crafts category, people can create an artifact, useful or decorative, utilizing any recyclable item. Creativity is key and entrants are encouraged to use their imagination.
Christmas is still months away, but a Christmas Decor can win ribbons and prizes for people who decorate a small table top tree, make a wreath, design a table top arrangement, Christmas stocking, or ornament. There is a limit of one entry per person.
Bakers can be challenged by this year’s special ingredient — macadamia nuts. Bakers can create breads, muffins, cookies, cakes, or any other dessert using the special ingredient. There is a limit of one entry for each group.
