Lindsay Vail piloted Malihini to a first-place finish in the opening race of the Nawiliwili Yacht Club’s Wahine Series, Thursday.
The strong winds that kept the island comfortable all week abated to a steady 10-15 knot range, providing the NYC Race Committee an opportunity to give the wahine two long courses to the Ninini Point Lighthouse, a distance of 4.8 miles.
Vail slipped the 35-foot catamaran across the finish line on an elapsed sail of 53:07, almost two minutes ahead of OZone (54:52), and corrected to a 54:27 PHRF, settling in the lead by a mere 30 seconds as OZone, piloted by Alison Fornari, corrected to a 54:57 PHRF.
A condition of the Wahine Series is a female needs to be at the wheel in order for the boat to qualify for points.
Ayla Millett piloted Fast Company to a third place, crossing on an elapsed 55:21 and correcting to 55:26 PHRF.
Papa‘au, skippered by Marcie Millett, crossed at 59:39 and corrected to 57:06 PHRF, followed by Lelele with Susan LeHoven at the wheel crossing at 58:14 and correcting to 58:03 PHRF.
Natalia Gamarra piloted Speedy across the line at 59:04 and corrected to 59:09 PHRF for sixth place with Bonnie Bojorquez moving Coyote across the line at 1:03:31 and correcting to 59:29 PHRF.
Bonnie Tiffany skippered Bonjolea across the line at 1:05:59 and corrected out to 1:03:27 PHRF.
The elapsed time of Coyote corrected to 49:20 Club for first place in that division followed by Speedy (53:42 Club), Bonjolea (55:29 Club) and Lelele (55:50 Club).
The public is invited to view the second race of the three-race series, Thursday from the jetty wall area. First flag flies at 5 p.m.
