LIHU‘E — The University of Hawai‘i women’s soccer team hosts its second straight tournament with the OHANA Hotels and Resorts No Ka Oi, August 27-29 at the Waipi‘o Peninsula Soccer Stadium. Cal Poly and Long Island join UH in the three-day, round-robin tournament.
UH and Cal Poly open the tournament at 7 p.m. on Friday. Cal Poly will play Long Island at 7 p.m. on Saturday and the tournament will conclude with UH taking on Long Island at 5 p.m. on Sunday, according to a release from the UH athletic department.
Hawai‘i captured the season-opening OHANA Hotels and Resorts Shootout with an emphatic 4-0 win over Wagner on Sunday. It was a nice rebound from a disappointing 1-0 loss to Pacific to open the season. In the end, six different players were named to the all-tournament team for UH, including tournament MVP Mari Punzal, from Kapa‘a.
The opponents this week represent the same conferences as last week’s teams (Big West and Northeastern). The competition, however, will be tougher with a Cal Poly squad that captured the Big West regular season title last season and a Long Island squad that is selected to finish third in the 11-team Northeastern Conference.
This will be just the second meeting between each of the squads. UH lost to Cal Poly during their inaugural 1994 season, and defeated Long Island in the 2002 season.
