Band of Horses begins their 2007 “Cease to Begin” album with these lines in a haunting refrain that echoes in a crescendo that concludes with a climactic chord struck on the guitar.
That lovely opener does one thing particularly well — it brings us to track 2. Don’t get me wrong, I adore the first tune. But the second, entitled “No one’s gonna love you,” simply shines.
More important, however, is its purpose on this planet: to be covered by Cee Lo Green. The Soul Machine takes this track to another level. And the accompanying video on his website brings the piece to life.
Cee Lo will fortunately be including this song in his “Lady Killer” album expected to be released later this year. While I was pleased with Mr. Green’s work with Danger Mouse as Gnarls Barkley — who didn’t like “Crazy”? — I have been quite anxious for his next solo body of work.
“Cee Lo Green … Is the Soul Machine,” an album I’ve been setting the needle down on for almost a decade, proved the singer/rapper/poet’s power on the mic. As with many musicians, it’s often the early pre-big-label-sell-out stuff that sets the bar.
For those less than eager to race to stores for “Lady Killer,” you’ll likely first hear his “FU” single on the airwaves. Admittedly solid, this will be the one topping the charts nationwide within a few months or whenever radio DJs see its sweetness.
My regrettably typical long-winded point with a digression or two is that what we set in motion today may not be fully realized until years down the road. If we buy into this logic, we should also be keeping a vigilant eye out for the things we got rolling in the past — intentional or not — that may come to fruition today.
Life works in mysterious ways.
And so it goes…
