Antone Soares III
Antone Soares III of Kalaheo died Aug. 8, 2010, at his home at age 53. Born on Jan. 23, 1957, in San Jose, Calif., he was a self employed Journeyman carpenter.
He was preceded in death by his parents Ernest Sr. and Alice Soares.
He is survived by his brothers Rodney (Joyce) Soares, Ernest (Rayna) Soares Jr., Alexander Soares and Alan Soares; sisters Leona (Calvin) Soares and Angela (Paul) Soares-Phillips; numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation from 9 to 10 a.m., Mass at 10 a.m., on Saturday, Aug. 21, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Kalaheo. Interment will be held on a later date.
Casual attire is suggested, and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Kaua‘i Hospice.
Arrangements are being handled by Garden Island Mortuary.
Madeline “Lena” Torres
Madeline “Lena” Ka‘iliponi Torres of Koloa died June 8, 2009, at age 82. Born on March 10, 1927, in Kalaupapa, Molokai, she was a lei maker at various Kaua‘i Hotels.
She was preceded in death by her husband Cresenciano “Chris” Torres, and daughters Bernadette “Luana” (Elliott) Rosa and Elizabeth Torres.
She is survived by Barbara (Butch) Diehl, Alvin Travens, Angelo Batin Jr., Yolanda (David) Cutcher, Sunday (Tom) Dargel, Christine (Jaime) Orozco, 13 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
Memorial service from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., on Saturday, Aug. 21, at Po‘ipu Beach Park.
Casual aloha attire is suggested.
Alma Ho
Alma Toshie Ho of Ewa Beach, O‘ahu, died Aug. 3, 2010, at Hawai‘i Medical Center-West, at age 62. She was born Oct. 9, 1947, in Honoka‘a, Hawai‘i.
She is survived by her sons Vernon Ho, Alvin Ho and Michael Ho; daughter Ginny Gruspe; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brothers Larry Nakagawa and Ray Nakagawa; numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation from 3:30 to 5 p.m., on Thursday, Aug. 19, at Diamond Head Mortuary Chapel. Casual attire is suggested and the family requests that flowers be omitted.
A private inurnment will be held at a later date.
Arrangements are being handled by Diamond Head Mortuary.
Robert Aitken
Robert Baker Aitken died Aug. 5, 2010, in Honolulu, at age 93. Born in Philadelphia, he was a Zen master and writer.
He is survived by his son Thomas Aitken, and three granddaughters.
A memorial service will be held in Honolulu at a later date.
Khamphet Vilaylak
Khamphet Vilaylak of Kapa‘a died Aug. 15, 2010, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at age 60. Born on Jan. 18, 1950, in Laos, he was a farmer employed by Kailana Farms.
He is survived by his wife Cindy Choy of Kapa‘a; siblings Khamsing (Allie Wong) Vilaylak, Khampane (Chu) Vilaylak, Eng (Jack Wong) Vilaylak, Khamsavath Vilaylak, Hongkham Vilaylak, Viengkham (Sinfung Chien) Vilaylak, Viengkeo (Savith Tangsouvanh) Vilaylak, Saysamone Vilaylak and Saysavath Vilaylak; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, on Thursday, Aug. 19, at Kapa‘a Hongwanji Mission located on 1170 Kuhio Hwy. Cremation will follow.
Arrangements are being handled by Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home.
Izumi Shirai
Izumi Mabel Shirai of Kekaha died Aug. 14, 2010, at Garden Island Health Care at age 93. Born on Aug. 2, 1917, on the Big Island, she was a clerk.
She is survived by her companion Roy Costa-Ayres; daughters Sandra (Ray) Seibert and Janice (Mark) Maehata; sons Clyde (Shirley) Shirai and Myles (Julie) Shirai; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation at 9 a.m., Mass at 11 a.m., on Friday, Aug. 20, at Saint Raphael’s Catholic Church in Koloa. Cremation to follow.

Hosea Lovell Jr.
Hosea Kaina Lovell Jr. of Anahola died July 23, 2010, at his home at age 84. Born on March 15, 1926, in Anahola, he was a Veteran of World War II, the Hawai‘i National Guard and retired as the Farm Manager at the University of Hawai‘i Agricultural Experimental Station in Wailua.
He is survived by his wife Jane Lovell of Anahola; sons Solomon (Carol) Lovell of Anahola, Robely Lovell of Anahola, and Hosea Lovell IV of California; daughters Kalei (Clayton) Arinaga of Kealia, and Nalani (Summer) Kaneakua of Anahola; grandsons Shane, Bronson, Robely Jr., Mikey, Chauncey, Keoni, Nicky, Brandon, Christian Lovell and Nicholas Kaneakua; granddaughters Randi Arinaga, Kanoe Arinaga, Kapua Kaneakua, Moku Kaneakua, Althea Lovell, Marie Leilani Lovell, and Lili‘uokalani Lovell; sister Loretta White of New York; hanai brother Abraham (Doris) Lovell of Honolulu; sister-in-law Jean Ikemoto Lovell of California; numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Visitation at 10 a.m., service at 11 a.m., on Saturday, Aug. 21, at Anahola Beach Park. Lunch to follow. Casual attire is suggested and leis are welcomed.
Michael Lorenz
Michael Philip Lorenz of Wailua Homesteads died Aug. 15, 2010, at his home at age 66. Born on June 15, 1944, in Farragut, Idaho, he was an artist and jewelry designer.
He was preceded in death by his parents Clarence Lorenz and Carol Mosier.
He is survived by Kathaleen Eastman-Lorenz; daughters Morgan Lorenz and Camden Lorenz; sister Joan Vanderheiden; numerous nieces and nephews; and his golf buddies at Wailua and the wine connoisseurs of Po‘ipu.
Following cremation, services will be private. Memories can be shared with the Lorenz family at P.O. Box 1863, Lihu‘e, Hawai‘i, 96766.
Abel Souza Sr.
Abel John Souza Sr. of Kapa‘a died July 30, 2010, at his home at age 65. Born on April 11, 1945, in O‘ahu, he was a retired foreman with Aina Site Construction.
He is survived by his wife Marlyn “Hoku” Souza of Kapa‘a; son Abel (Vanessa) Souza Jr.; daughters Michelle (Matt) Reis, Kimberly Souza and Brenda Souza all of Kapa‘a; stepsons Sonny (Lopeka) Kelekoma of Waianae and Shawn Kelekoma of Kapa‘a; stepdaughters Shantel “Telly” Kelekoma and Sharnal “Naka” Kelekoma of Kapa‘a; brother Bernard (Sally) Ancheta of California; sister Ramona (Jim) Yang of California; 24 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., service to follow, on Saturday, Aug. 28, at Borthwick Kaua‘i Mortuary Chapel. Burial at Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens.
