LIHU‘E — Gov. Linda Lingle has released $65.5 million to the state Department of Education for repair-and-maintenance projects at public-school campuses and DOE facilities statewide, including $3.1 million for Kaua‘i schools, according to a news release.
The largest single Kaua‘i item is $378,000 to replace the fire-alarm system at Kapa‘a Middle School, followed by $359,000 to re-roof a building at Kapa‘a High School.
Kapa‘a High School will receive nearly a third of the total funds for Kaua‘i public-school upgrades, $965,000, with three buildings to be re-roofed and $119,000 to be spent to reroute electrical lines on campus.
King Kaumuali‘i Elementary School will get $827,000 to re-roof two buildings, replace floors in four, first-floor classrooms, and replace gutters and fascia on one building and air-conditioning units in another.
Kapa‘a Middle School will get $655,000 to replace lockers around three buildings, air-conditioning in one room, and the campus-wide, fire-alarm system.
Some $536,000 goes to Kaua‘i High School for carpentry repairs and replacement of air-conditioning units.
Kalaheo School will receive $499,000 for, among other things, re-roofing and adding gutters to the historic Kato Gym, paving the gym parking lot and re-roofing of and taking care of termite damage in another building.
Waimea High will get $359,000 for replacement of air-conditioning units in one building, installation of ceiling fans and solar fans on the second floors of two other buildings, and replacement of a campus sidewalk.
The funds will be used as part of an effort to implement an estimated $140 million worth of repairs and improvements at close to 250 public schools across the state, including O‘ahu ($46 million), Big Island ($8.9 million), Maui County ($7.5 million) and Kaua‘i ($3.1 million).
The planned projects include electrical repairs, re-roofing, resurfacing of driveways, drainage improvements, computer-lab repairs, replacing doors and windows, fire-alarm upgrades, air-conditioning improvements, ventilation and ceiling-fan upgrades, handicap ramps, restroom renovations, new fences, new cafeteria equipment, installing safety railings, plumbing repairs, parking-lot improvements, and various structural improvements.
