NAWILIWILI — Lindsey Vail piloted Malihini to a first overall finish, but dropped the race on the PHRF correction, Thursday.
Vail, capturing first place in last week’s Nawiliwili Yacht Club Wahine Series opener, moved the 35-foot catamaran to a 55:25 elapsed sail over the 5-mile course under 10-15 knot winds out of the East-northeast. But the PHRF correction took its toll as Fast Company, piloted by Ayla Millett, 17, crossed the line second overall at 56:07 and corrected to a 56:12 PHRF.
That correction gave the Olson 30 first place in the three-race series, dropping Malihini to second place by just 37 seconds with a 56:49 PHRF correction. Fast Company finished third to OZone in last week’s opener by a 31-second gap in the PHRF corrections.
Last week, Vail sailed the catamaran to a first finish by 30 seconds with the correction.
OZone, with Alison Fornari at the stick, filled in the third place spot on a 58:36 elapsed sail, correcting to 58:41 PHRF.
Last week, Fornari sailed OZone to a second overall finish below Malihini, giving the catamaran a slight advantage in points with just one race remaining.
Speedy, skippered by Natalia Gamarra on the wheel, filled in the fourth spot on a 1:01:02 elapsed sail, correcting to 1:01:08 PHRF.
Lelele (1:02:26 elapsed, 1:02:15 PHRF), Coyote (1:08:41 elapsed, 1:04:20 PHRF), Papa‘au (1:08:28 elapsed, 1:05:33 PHRF) and Bonjolea (1:11:02 elapsed, 1:08:18 PHRF) rounded out the eight-boat fleet.
Marcie Millett, Ayla’s mother, was at the stick of Papa‘au, which edged out Coyote by 13 seconds overall, but dropped to seventh place on the PHRF correction. The correction factor hurt even more when Papa‘au corrected to 1:00:33 Club for fourth place below Coyote’s 53:20 Club for first place in that class.
The public is invited to view the final race of the Wahine Series, Thursday when the first flags fly starting at 5 p.m. at the Nawiliwili jetty wall area where the NYC Race Committee sets up its command center.
