Kapahi residents can enjoy a fine cup of gourmet coffee right in their neighborhood. The New Cannery — formerly known as The Olde Cannery — serves some delicious coffee.
The “Kaua‘i Chai,” however, stands out in the middle of all the lattes, breves, mochas and cappuccinos.
Sweet barista Mona Boyer prepares this spicy drink, made with local chai, and sweetened with Kaua‘i honey.
Mona said the drink is a favorite with the wahine, who can have it with regular, non-fat milk or even with soy milk. It can be served hot or cold, but it’s when it’s hot that the spices in the chai really tingle your senses.
Mona is a young, happy grandma. It’s nearly impossible to imagine that she has three children and seven grandchildren, when she looks not a day over 30 years old.
The New Cannery also serves deli-style food, and has all the amenities of a convenience store. It’s open Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
