LIHU‘E —The Kapa‘a and Kaua‘i high school girls teams are tied with 10 points each following the first week of Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation bowling.
The Red Raider boys soared to 11 points with two first finish games and a second place finish.
Opening Wednesday at the Lihu‘e Bowling Center, the Kapa‘a boys are two points back at nine with two second place finishes and a first finish.
Waimea boys and girls finish with four points for each team.
Overall, Kaua‘i boys managed a 2186 pinfall over three games, challenged by Kapa‘a at 2155, just 31 pins back. Waimea boys finished with 1793 pins led by Chase Ueno who rolled a 195 in Game 3 after games of 147 and 153 in Games 1 and 2, respectively.
The Kaua‘i girls, rolling behind Darcie Vea’s high game of 174, finished three games with a 2119 pinfall over Kapa‘a’s 2046 total, aided by Joanna Chang’s 178 in Game 2.
Kaua‘i managed to eke out the tie despite finishing with just one first finish to the Warriors’ two by getting the tying point for its pinfall total. Waimea girls finished with a 1725 pinfall paced by Lacie Montemayor and Bronte Acosta finishing with 155 and 154, respectively in Game 2.
Vea was joined by Kelsey Cadiente and Malia Garcia rolling 167 each as Kaua‘i piled up an 816 pinfall to Kapa‘a’s 670 in Game 1.
But the Kapa‘a girls answered as Chang picked up her day’s best 178 in Game 2 and combining with Reggie McCabe and Angelika Questin adding 159 and 152, respectively, Kapa‘a finished with a 706 to Kaua‘i’s 644 in Game 2.
That momentum carried to Game 3 where Questin led Kapa‘a with 167 as Kapa‘a finished 11 pins ahead of Kaua‘i, 670-659, the Red Raiders getting 159 from Vea and 153 from Cadiente.
The Kaua‘i boys, finishing with 167 from John Quisel in Game 1 and Joseph Nebre in Game 3, and James Ruiz rolling a 166 in Game 3, stayed 31 pins ahead of Kapa‘a who got a 198 from Randy Iloreta Jr. in Game 2, the highest score for the boys. Justin Uegawa, normally a strong golf contributor, finished with a 176 and 170 in Games 1 and 2, respectively to help the Warriors’ pinfall.
Waimea boys, finishing with 1793, was paced by the rolling of Chase Ueno who finished with 147, 153 and 195 and Bryle Rivera (137-120-142).
The KIF bowling season enters is second week, Thursday starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Lihu‘e Bowling Center.
