Hope and confidence needed
After two years of nearly having no work as a member of the construction industry, I am experiencing a pick up in business. It was bound to happen, as our economics have been cyclical for decades. If were are lucky, approximately six years of good times and about two years of bad times. On and on this cycle goes.
The only real thing that government can do to help the economy in the long term is to give the people hope and confidence. Hope and confidence that government will not grow beyond its means, and that taxes will not be increased for anyone, including the ones who fuel big and small businesses. Hope and confidence that government will watch out for the people so banks and others do not unfairly gouge the public (Obama has done well on that front).
The administration’s stimulus package as a whole did not work. Nearly a trillion dollars, of which government did not have, have been spent and just over a half a million jobs were saved and/or created. The employment rate is still nearly double digits in many states. This does not give us hope and confidence.
Locally, the unions are backing candidates against their own party incumbents because they did not support raising taxes.
This does not give us hope and confidence.
We will have hope and confidence if our elected officials commit to cutting the fat of government and not raise taxes on anyone.

Mahalo from children’s friends
The Friends of the Childrens Justice Center of Kaua‘i would like to say a big mahalo to all of Kaua‘i ohana who assisted, donated and attended our Fourth Annual Treasure our Children Kaua‘i Style fundraiser at the Kaua‘i Marriott (Resort & Beach Club) tennis courts this past month. All this could not have happened without first and foremost the assistance of Brad Snyder of the Kauai Lagoons and Dean Pigao (former board member). The location, overlooking Kalapaki Bay at sunset, was perfect!
Lady Ipo Kahaunaele-Ferreira began our program with her beautiful pule, followed by hula dancing with kumu Puamohala Kaholokula and Halau Mohala o ka Pua Hau Hele. Sean Carillo opened up his segment with his chicken skin performance of “Hallelujah,” and the evening ended with smooth sounds of Michael Barretto.
Despite the hard economic times we are facing, the community came forward and generously donated in countless number of ways on behalf of the keiki o ka ‘aina and we’d like to thank you for your kokua (help) in allowing us to have another successful fundraiser. Our community on Kaua‘i is stronger when our businesses become aware of child abuse and neglect prevention. In partnership with the (state) Judiciary, the Friends of the Childrens Justice Center provide support to children of sexual or serious physical abuse or witness to abuse. Again, a big mahalo to all of you who have supported the Friends of the Childrens Justice Center of Kaua‘i!
Sincerely,
Sue Maruyama-Strickland, Friends of the Childrens Justice Center of Kaua‘i, Silent Auction Chair
America stole Hawai‘i
Marty Evans (“Loving on America”), letters 09/15/10, what is hard to fathom is the fact that America committed an act of war and terrorism against a peaceful kingdom of Hawai‘i in 1893. They did this by landing armed U.S. Marines with howitzers aimed at the queen and her palace and have put Hawai‘i under military occupation since that day forward. Practice what you preach Mr. Evans, if you love your country, move there. America stole the lands, and saved it for no one else but greedy American and European businessmen. It was “the fruit that was ripe to pick” as they put it, or the “unsinkable battleship” during the Spanish-American War.
Yes Mr. Evans, September 11 is a memorable and unfortunate day to remember indeed, but for thousands of Hawaiian nationals, the stealing of their nation on January 17, 1893 was even more horrible. See U.S. Public Law 103-150 sir, and become enlightened.

U.S. stole — not saved — Hawai‘i
I response to Marty Evans, the loving American (“Loving on America,” Sept. 15). Firstly, the USA did not save Hawai‘i, they stole it, and in Kamehameha’s Hawai‘i you would be quickly executed. Secondly, you obviously love our county of Hawai‘i and that is why you moved and live here. Lastly, Hawai‘i always was, is and will continue to be paradise, even long after the dissolution and demise of the horrible place where you ran away from, the U.S. of A’s.

Mahalo for pulling go-cart plan
We would like to thank John Outzen for withdrawing his application for the go-cart project on Kawaihau Road. This genuine response to our concerns shows this is a man of character and that he is true to his word. We appreciate and thank you for listening, Mr. Outzen. We also want to thank everyone else who joined in to help us get our opinion heard!
Our community rose to the occasion and stuck together. We walk away from this experience with many new friends for which we are also very grateful!
Randie and Kathy Peters, Kapa‘a
