LIHU‘E —Kaua‘i voters cast their ballots by an almost two-to-one margin for Daynette “Dee” Morikawa in her effort to unseat Roland Sagum in the Democratic race for state District 16 representative, according to this evening’s preliminary primary election results.
Morikawa, who received 2,604 votes to Sagum’s 1,784 with six of seven precincts reporting, will face Republican Phil Sterker in the Nov. 2 general election.
In other local races, incumbent Derek Kawakami is leading the field of 15 candidates vying for seven seats on the Kaua‘i County Council. The top 14 advance to the general election.
Following Kawakami, in order of most votes to least with 16 of 17 precincts reporting, are: Nadine Nakamura, JoAnn Yukimura, Jay Furfaro, Tim Bynum, Mel Rapozo, Dickie Chang, Bill “Kaipo” Asing, KipuKai Kualii, Ted Daligdig, Ed Justus, Rolf Bieber, Ken Taylor, Dennis Fowler and Mizdebz DeSilva Carveiro.
Former Rep. Neil Abercrombie won the Democratic nomination for governor in Hawai‘i over former Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann, according to preliminary results. Abercrombie had 59.4 percent of the vote to Hannemann’s 37.8 percent with 229 of 242 precincts reporting.
Kaua‘i’s Gary Hooser was in fourth place in the race to win the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor with 229 of 242 precincts reporting. Brian Schatz held a commanding lead with 34.8 percent of the vote, followed by Bobby Bunda and Norman Sakamoto. Trailing Hooser are Lyla Berg, Jon Riki Karamatsu and Steve Hirakami.
