The Kaua‘i High School air riflery teams opened on a winning note against Kapa‘a, Wednesday at the Kapa‘a range.
Returning marksman Reyn Morioka topped the Red Raider boys, who took a 1,093-997 win over Kapa‘a. Malu Hornos set the pace for the Kaua‘i women with a 223 (90-72-61) to lead the Red Raider girls to a 1,002-900 showing over Kapa‘a.
Justin Uegawa, often seen on the golf course, exchanged his clubs for an air rifle and posted the best score, 90 out of a possible 100 points, in the prone position for the boys.
That score tied fellow Warrior Anthony Aiwohi, who ended with the top score for the Kapa‘a boys at 226 (90-72-64). Uegawa followed with a 215 (90-74-51). Adam Matthew Clark filled in the No. 3 berth for Kapa‘a on a 202 (77-65-60), followed by Kenneth Villanueva (70-69-53-192) and Kalani Murakami (52-61-49-162).
Morioka, another golfer, topped the field of Red Raiders who all finished with 200-plus points.
Morioka was 10 points below the high mark of 90 in the prone position, but rebounded with the day’s high 86 in the kneeling position and 76 in the standing position to post a 242, the highest boys score.
Travis Navarro, following in his brother Tyler’s footsteps, followed with a 231 (85-78-68). Matthew Kawamura, in his second year on the range, finished with a 214 (84-76-54), followed by Keegan Tanaka (79-67-58-204) and Kurt Noe (74-69-59-202).
Following Hornos, Delissa Nobriga posted a 212 (77-67-68). She was followed by Meghan Fujimoto at 208 (73-71-64), Adriana Medeiros at 180 (76-58-46) and Kristyn Yamamotoya at 179 (68-51-60).
Mary Walker was the sole Warrior wahine to post a 200 (75-62-63), Alison Yamamoto missing the 200-mark by a digit at 199 (69-70-60). Kaylyn Armstrong-Shiira followed at 181 (80-45-56). Kichelle Momohara (55-055-66-176) and Marissa Goo (60-56-28-144) rounded out the leaderboard for Kapa‘a.
With the sweep, Kaua‘i joins Waimea with opening wins for both boys and girls.
Kaua‘i will host Island School, Wednesday while Kapa‘a travels to the Hanapepe Armory where it will face Waimea.
Ross Shimabukuro, athletic director for Kaua‘i High School, said Kaua‘i, despite being host, will travel to the Island School range for the Red Raiders’ experience at shooting both boys and girls relays in the 32-bay range layout.
Both matches start at 3 p.m.
