Mokihana hula

Kaua‘i Beach Resort

The 26th Annual Kaua‘i Mokihana Festival, themed, “Year of ‘Olelo Hawai‘i,” continues with hula competitions. See the group ‘auana  featuring modern hula. This group competition allows halau to use traditional, borrowed or newly created implements to add a contemporary flavor to hula. Categories include kaikamahine, keikikane, wahine, kane, kupuna and hui/‘ohana. Come early, as Kaua‘i’s Aloha Festivals Royal Court will attend this event in full regalia with ceremonial entrance. The hula grand finale is Saturday. Admission is $15 in advance, $20 at the door. The finale opens with the solo competition, followed by all competing halau.

World-renowned harpist in concert

St. Michael & All Angels’ Episcopal Church, Lihu‘e

Harpist Sharene Lum will play for all services this weekend celebrating the feast day of St. Michael and All Angels. She’s played professionally in Los Angeles and toured the world with legendary tenor Placido Domingo. She will be accompanied by Dean Taba on bass, who has been featured on many CDs, TV shows and movie soundtracks.

A free concert is open to the public at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. A reception will precede the concert at 6:15 p.m. on the church lanai. She will also perform the preludes for all weekend services, Saturday at 5:15 p.m. and Sunday morning at 7:15 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.

Kalalau Trail

Think “Cats,” “Phantom of the Opera” and “Jesus Christ Superstar” and you have an energized evening of song with local talent. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door, $15 for students. The Lawa‘i International Center

Experience a tranquil walk on the path of the 88 Shrines, watch a brief video and enjoy a talk-story session about the archaeological and hidden cultural treasures in Lawa‘i Valley. The center is open to the public on the second and last Sunday of every month, or by appointment. Donations are appreciated. Women Artists of Kaua’i exhibit

Church of the Pacific, Princeville

This fine-art festival and fundraiser is a free, family event. Fine art, prints, gifts, sculpture, oil paintings, acrylics, photography, mixed media and watercolors will be featured as well as painting demonstrations by the artists. All will be for a good cause as a portion of the proceeds will go directly to the church’s outreach program which includes support of a food pantry and community garden.

Participating artists include Anna Skaradzinska, Marlene Czajkowski, Lilian de Mello, Helen Turner, Marionette Taboniar, Dava Shepherd, Leslie Tribolet, Susi Strom and Millicent Cummings.

5th annual creative competition

The online literary journal announces its fifth annual creative competition. This year’s theme is “Refuge,” and the event is sponsored by the Garden Island Arts Council.

Cash prizes will be awarded. For written: first place, $100; second place, $50; third place, $25; for visual: One $100 award. Winners and other noteworthy contributors will be posted on the website and invited to read on a special night later this fall (date and place to be determined). Essay, story (imagined or real), memoir and poems are all welcome. Visual entries must be submitted in jpg format. As in previous years, entries must be relevant to Kaua‘i. KauaiBackstory.com is a venue for rigorous writing with a view about Kaua‘i. Organizers said in a press release they look for writing that builds understanding, not walls.

Entries will be judged on whether they achieve this vision or not. A student category will be created pending interest and writing quality. Contest participants may submit one entry per category. Visit the website for guidelines or to view the quality of works posted and the blog’s mission statement. The deadline for entries is midnight Sept. 30. Text entries must be pasted into the body of an e-mail (no attachments) and images must be sent as jpg attachments.
