LIHU‘E — Many years ago, the corner of Kamalu and Olohena Roads in Wailua Homesteads was part of a pineapple plantation with a railroad. During WWII, a dispensary was located at the corner, and over the years many antique medicine bottles have been found on the site.
Today this area is the home of Sarah Rogers, the winner of the September 2010 Neighborhood Pride Award.
Sarah purchased the “empty” lot in 2004 and immediately began the process of preparing the site for the construction of her home. She removed old, discarded water heaters, bath tubs, railroad ties and even a kitchen sink.
Sarah cultivated a half acre by herself for little money by using plants and cuttings from bon dances and the neighbors. Sarah is constantly trying to keep unwanted plants and overgrowth in check.
The self-described yard-art junkie calls her yard a “work in progress.” Sure enough, there are little treasures to be discovered everywhere, including three water features (which she dug out herself), a gazebo, large and small decorative rocks, meandering gravel pathways, a shade house for the vandas, a tree stump carved in the shape of a dolphin, compost piles, a forest area that denotes a neighbor’s boundary, an herb garden, peanut plants and a bamboo grove.
She will receive her award at the Wailua-Kapa‘a Neighborhood Association monthly meeting to be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Kapa‘a Public Library. Featured speaker Jean Souza will discuss future plans for the humpback whale sanctuary.”
