Small Town Coffee, in old Kapa‘a town, is just what the owners claim it to be: old school.
The witty Anni Caporuscio, together with Jeremy Hartshorn, acquired the charming coffee shop a little over four years ago. The coffee shop already existed for 18 months when they bought it, but together they have made Small Town a point of reference in Kapa‘a. It’s everyone’s — tourists and locals — favorite coffee shop.
For what’s worth it, Anni treats her coffee beans with love and affection. She said after two weeks being exposed to the “five enemies of coffee,” the beans start to go bad. The five enemies, she said, are light, air, temperature, time and moisture.
So if you have been keeping your coffee in the freezer, it’s time to switch habits. Get a dark-colored, air-tight container and put your coffee in your cupboard. Make sure to grind and drink it within two weeks.
Anni said a coffee shop is made of 60 percent good coffee and food, and 40 percent an inviting environment.
She rents out Small Town for private events for only $50 a night, a huge bang for the buck.
On Tango Tuesday the dancing crowd takes over, moves all the furniture out of the way and dances all night long.
On Saturdays it’s Greek night. No one wears a toga or does questionable things, but they do eat some pretty good Greek food.
It doesn’t matter if you come in for coffee, food or dancing, going to Small Town is an experience you’ll want to repeat over and over.
Drive to the north edge of Old Kapa‘a Town, and look for thetwo-story blue building that looks over 80 years old. Park acrossthe street, on the makai side of the highway. Risk your lifecrossing the highway in front of Small Town, or use the crosswalkabout 100 yards away. Suggestion: If with kids, use the crosswalk. If by yourself, play chicken. If with your dog, just cross thehighway and everyone will break for you.
