The Kaua‘i Water Polo team will host an O‘ahu team for a series of games at the YMCA Kaua‘i pool next Saturday.
That game will be the highlight of the 2010 Kaua‘i Cup, hosted by Kaua‘i Water Polo and closing its 2010 season.
Coach Billy Brown of Kaua‘i Water Polo and Swim Kaua‘i Aquatics, said the weekend will feature the O‘ahu team going up against Kaua‘i on Saturday afternoon and both teams squaring off for the championship, Sunday morning.
The game will punctuate an afternoon of other games, as well as a clinic on the sport from Kaua‘i Water Polo and visiting coaches, including some O‘ahu girls high school team coaches and some accomplished collegiate and national water polo players, Brown said.
“The clinic is open to everyone,” Brown said in an e-mail. “Kids, adults, beginners and especially high school players are encouraged to be part of the clinic. The purpose of the clinic is to help everyone while, of course, promoting high school water polo.”
Saturday afternoon will open with a Kaua‘i intersquad match featuring a mix of adults and students starting at noon.
Brown and other Kaua‘i Water Polo players will lead the first clinic that starts on Saturday at 1 p.m. and will precede the O‘ahu-Kaua‘i match, with those teams squaring off at 2 p.m.
Visiting coaches Aukai Ferguson, a former Brigham Young University-Hawai‘i and Kahuku High School coach, Aaron Waldrip, the Mililani High School girls coach, and Heidi Ferguson, a former Women’s National Team member, will lead the clinic starting at 3 p.m.
That clinic will be followed by another Mixed water polo match. At its conclusion, that will lead into a Sunset Bar-B-Que dinner and social for all players and teams until sunset.
Sunday morning warmups start at 9:30 a.m. with the Kaua‘i-O‘ahu Championship game starting at 10 a.m.
Brown said the Kaua‘i Cup will wrap up the Kaua‘i Water Polo official season for this year.
