LIHU‘E — Hawai‘i Children’s Theatre announced its fall show “Peter Pan,” opens next month, a press release states.
The show incorporates the charm of J.M. Barrie’s classic tale, which follows the adventures of Peter Pan, Tinker Bell, the children (Wendy, Michael and John), plus the pirates and Indians. The musical includes the songs “Never Never Land,” “I Won’t Grow Up” and “I’m Flying.”
Opening night is Friday, Nov. 12. The show will run for three weekends at the Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall in Lihu‘e, and closes Nov. 28.
Peter (Corissa Berrett), the boy who lives in Neverland and won’t grow up, comes to the Darling family nursery and encounters the Darling children, Wendy (Ke‘alohi Anderson), John (Hikari Oberman) and Michael (Sierra Mireles) as well as their dog/nurse, Nana (Kay Torgerson, also playing the Crocodile, Captain Hook’s nemesis).
Mrs. Darling (Dakshina Marlier, also a mermaid in Neverland) has just tucked everyone into bed with the lullaby, “Tender Shepherds,” when Peter comes through the window chasing after his shadow, who is acting up!
Back in Neverland, Captain Hook (Fredan Alfonso, who also plays the role of Mr. Darling) and his band of pirates from the Jolly Roger (Kyle McDonald, Cheston Chandler-Borges, Dexter Olivier, Nestor Figueroa, Beorn Chantara, Ka‘ala Morrison, John Cabello and Noah Cabello) are stirring up trouble for Peter’s gang, the Lost Boys (Nico Maione, Syndey Agudong, Chloe Rudinoff, Athena Alexander, Carolyn Price and Makenna Olson), who are at odds with Princess Tiger Lily (Lorinda Sasan) and the Piccaninny Tribe (Karmela Buenconsejo, Kilinoe Garcia, Blade Kanekuni, Carly Koulbanis, Juliet Monier, Sara Morimoto, Jaclyn Nishihira, Jessica Palmer, Kaylee Russell and Lindsey Nakea-Tresler).
Mermaid Cove is a relatively quiet place for mermaids Kiana Okino, Paris Tennberg and Emily Threlkeld (also playing Indians) until Captain Hook and the pirates show up.
The detailed sets are designed by Ron Horoshko and built by David Griffiths.
Costumer Esther Manning (”The Wiz,” “Cinderella” and Kaua‘i Performing Arts Center productions) returns to create the production’s elaborate costumes, a press release states.
Artistic direction is in the hands of Marly Madayag (Kalaheo School drama director).
The choreography flows from the mind of Carol Culver (“Sound of Music,” “Grease” and “Cinderella”).
Music Director, Nina Saraos (Kaua‘i High choral director) is fresh off the run of “Rent.”
Melissa McFerrin, stage manager, keeps it all together for the production.
The show is produced once again by Debra Blachowiak, celebrating her 12th fall production in a row, and assisted by Cheri Threlkeld.
Marc Sicignano is in charge of all technical effects, including flying.
“Peter Pan” hopes to dazzle and enchant audiences when it comes to Kaua‘i in November, the release states.
Special shows include one at 4 p.m. Nov. 14, where all seats will be $6 if patrons bring donations for the Kaua‘i Independent Food Bank or The Salvation Army.
On Nov. 21 there will be a special fundraiser prior to the show at 4 p.m. There will be no show on Friday, Nov. 19, a county furlough day, but there will be two shows on Saturday, Nov. 20 to make up for it. Tickets may be obtained from cast members and crew. For more information visit hawaiichildrenstheatre.com or call 246-8985.
