LIHU‘E — Henry Park had the best round of the day, finishing 5-under par 72 following the second day of the Kaua‘i Collegiate Invitational, Monday at the Puakea Golf Course.
Park, carding a 33 on the front nine, finished with a 34 on the back nine, contending with the wind rising in velocity from the morning calmness. Park was tied for 26th following Sunday’s opening round.
That performance catapaulted the University of Hawai‘i-Black team from its sixth place finish, Sunday, to second on Monday. It also moved the team to third place following 36 holes of the 54-hole tournament.
The University of San Diego, two-time champion of the tournament, continued to lead the field, finishing with a team 279 paced by Scott Brace (35-33-68), Honolulu native Alex Ching (35-35-70), Shah Manav (34-36-70), and yesterday’s top shooter, Guner Wiebe (36-35-71).
Following Park for the Hawai“i-Black team, T J Kau, one of two Kaua‘i natives in the tournament and tied for second place after Sunday’s play, continued with a 2-under par 70 (35-35), improving a stroke over his opening round 71 (35-36). Jared Sawada finished at even par (31-41-72) followed by first-year golfer Tommy Yamashita (37-37-74) and Kaua‘i native Cory Oride (41-37-78).
Oliver Grabb of the Gonzaga University team set off fireworks when he grabbed a hole-in-one on the Puakea No. 16.
However, despite the fireworks, Gonzaga finished with a 297 team score, Grabb ending the day at 2-over par 74 (38-36). Gonzaga was led by Francis Santiago at even par (36-36-72), Grabb and Kyle Huus (38-36-74).
Alastair Tidcombe (35-34) and Scott Malo (35-34) each carded 3-under par 69 to lead the University of British Columbia to its 285 team score, Monday, five strokes off the pace.
The 54-hole tournament concludes Tuesday on the par-72 course checking in at 6,954 yards.
Participating teams include San Diego, Hawai‘i-Black, Hawai‘i-White, Gonzaga, British Columbia, Hawai‘i Pacific, Northern Colorado, Osaka Gakuin, Seattle, Texas-San Antonio.
