Trevor Kua is tied for third in the Boys 11-12 age group following the opening round of the Kiahuna Junior Classic played Saturday at the Kiahuna Golf Club in Po‘ipu.
Kua, whose brother is one of the top players with the University of Hawai‘i golf program, finished the opening round tied with Andrew Chin of Honolulu at 83, six strokes off the pace set by leader Taisei Negishi of Hilo, Hawai‘i.
Negishi finished the opening round at 7-over par 77 followed by Kyle Suppa of Honolulu at 81.
Jamie Amimoto of Lihu‘e is also in third place with an opening round 99, below the pace of 84 set by Justin Kurihara of Honolulu in the Boys 13-14 age group. George Corpuz, also of Honolulu, is in second with an 89, five stroke off the pace.
Jacob Dysinger of Kapa‘a is in fourth at 129.
Logan Gibson of Kilauea is tied for fifth at 85 with Taylor McGerity of Honolulu. Kane Rogers set the pace for the Boys 7-10 with a 4-over par 74 followed by Andy Kang, also of Honolulu, finishing three strokes back at 77. Ryker Morikawa of Aiea is in third at 79 followed by Acey Yanagishita of Honolulu at 83.
Malia Nam of Honolulu leads the Girls 7-10 age group with a 74, followed by Aneka Seumanutaa of Kapolei at 82.
Lisa Kang leads the Girls 13-14 with an opening round 79 and Jonah Fonacier of Mililani tops the Boys 15-18 age group at 78. Kaua‘i’s Reyn Morioka, a strong Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation golfer for Kaua‘i High School, is tied for fifth at 92 with Nevin Yoshida of Waipahu.
Allisen Corpuz o Honolulu leads the Girls 15-18 with an opening round 76, three strokes ahead of Brittany Fan of Pearl City who carded a 79.
The Kiahuna Junior Classic wraps up Sunday with the girls foursomes teeing off from 7:30 a.m.
This tournament is the last opportunity for juniors to earn points toward the Hawai‘i State Junior Golf Association Player of the Year, and to earn an invitation to play in the 2010 Hali‘imaile Tournament of Champions, Dec. 4-5 at the Wailea Golf Club on Maui.
