The Matsuri Festival filled the rooms of the Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall in Lihu‘e last Saturday, with various demonstrations from the art of bonsai and flower arranging to kendo and kimono picture-taking. Many festival-goers wore their hachimaki they had made, a strip of cloth tied around the forehead, a symbol of strength and effort in Japanese culture.
Outside, craft vendors had booths set up, as well as organizations such as the Japanese Club at Kaua‘i High School and the Lawa‘i International Center. Manjushaka (Red Spider Lily Flower) performed in the auditorium, traveling all the way from Iwaki City, Fukushima, Japan.
