Bernard “Barney” Baptiste, born in ‘Oma‘o, passed away at his home in Pacific Grove, Calif. on Sept. 1, 2010 at the age of 89. He was born on Sept. 8, 1920. A WWII veteran, he retired from the U.S. Army after 23 years of service. A 10th degree black belt in jujitsu, he spent decades training and mentoring students in the arts of judo and jujitsu, producing national and Olympic champions. He was an accomplished musician with a love of Hawaiian music.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Masami; three children: Sandy Gardiner of Carmel, Calif.; Cathy Blake of Pacific Grove, Calif.; and Connie Simon of Tustin, Calif; son-in-law Sandy Simon, six grandsons and one great-grandson.
John McMaster Jr.
John McMaster Jr. of Wailua Homesteads died on Sept. 23, 2010, at home at age 60. Born Aug. 4, 1950, in New Orleans, La., he was a plasterer with Local Union No. 630.
Preceded in death by mother Ernestine Burrows and father John McMaster Sr., he is survived by his wife, Lima McMaster; daughter, Akanesi T-Tawake; sisters Iris Gullette and Vicki McMaster, aunt Queen Poindexter and many nephews and nieces.
A celebration of life will be at noon Saturday, Oct. 9, at Lydgate Beach Park pavilion.
Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home assisted the McMaster family with arrangements.
Stephanie Pollard
Stephanie Leilani Kaui Pollard, 61, of Waipahu, Hawai‘i, passed away Aug. 18, 2010 in Waipahu. Born Jan. 30, 1949 in Lihu‘e, she was a resident manager of Kunia Terrace and Leolua Gardens in Waipahu.
She is survived by fiancé, Steven Jonah Akina Jr.; sons Richard T. Pollard Jr. and Robert K. (Trisha) Pollard; daughters Leilani (Manu Kanoa) Pollard and Leina‘ala A.K. Pollard; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Burial at Keapana family grave site, 5710 Haua‘ala Rd., Kapa‘a, Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. Flowers are welcome.

Bernard Moniz of ‘Aiea died Oct. 6, 2010 in Honolulu at the age of 59. Born in Waimea, Kaua‘i, he was a machinist and he served in the National Guard.
He is survived by his wife, Juliana Moniz; daughters, Malia Macquiston and Carrie Moniz; brothers Manuel Moniz, Jr., Ernest R. Moniz and Raymond Moniz, and numerous nieces and nephews. Private services are planned.
