LIHU‘E — Tyrus Delos Reyes, 26, of Puhi, could face up to 20 years in prison after being found guilty Nov. 23 on felony drug and weapons charges.
In two separate cases heard together before 5th Circuit Judge Randal Valenciano, Reyes changed his pleas from not guilty to no contest.
The felony charges include possession of methamphetamine and keeping an unloaded firearm other than a pistol or revolver in an illegal place to keep such a weapon.
Both are class C felonies punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000, per count, with Valenciano having the option to double the terms to 10 years each and, if the judge desired, run the terms consecutively instead of concurrently, for a total of 20 years.
Terms of a plea agreement worked out by Sam Jajich, county deputy prosecuting attorney, and Mike Soong, defense attorney, call for several charges in the two cases to be dropped, with the remaining charges in the second case all being misdemeanors or lesser crimes.
In the felony case, Delos Reyes, formerly one of the Kaua‘i Police Department’s Most Wanted criminals, was originally charged with driving without a license or registration, third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, possession of drug paraphernalia, and being a criminal in possession of an un-permitted firearm as well as keeping an unloaded firearm other than a pistol or revolver in an illegal place to keep such a weapon.
In that case, Jajich agreed to drop the driving, paraphernalia and two of the three weapons charges.
In the second case, Delos Reyes was originally charged with two counts of third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, two counts of third-degree promotion of a detrimental drug, possession of paraphernalia and driving without a license and without no-fault vehicle insurance.
In that second case, Delos Reyes pleaded no contest to three charges, and was found guilty by Valenciano of possession of marijuana, driving without a license and driving without no-fault insurance. The other charges were dropped.
Sentencing for both cases is scheduled for Feb. 10.
Delos Reyes remains confined at Kaua‘i Community Correctional Center in Wailua.
