LIHU‘E — The Department of Parks and Recreation was recently honored with a 2010 Project of the Year Award in the Parks and Trails category and the Hawai‘i Project of the Year Award by the Hawai‘i Chapter of the American Public Works Association, a county news release states.
The awards were presented last month to Deputy Director Kylan Dela Cruz, consultant Akinaka and Associates, Ltd., and contractor Jas. W. Glover, Ltd. for their partnership on the Kapa‘a to Kealia portion of the multi-use path, Ke Ala Hele Makalae, which resulted in the construction of an outstanding public works project.
Now Kaua’i’s multi-use path project is a contender for APWA’s national award for the Top Project of 2010.
“We are honored to be recognized with awards for collaborating with Akinaka and Associates and Jas. W. Glover, which led to a seamless transition between two segments of the coastal path. It takes a team to produce a high quality project,” said Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. “Now our residents and visitors are enjoying walking, jogging and riding bikes along the coastline, taking in magnificent views.”
The mayor also acknowledged the Federal Highways Administration, state Department of Transportation, and the County Council for providing the funding for the multi-use path.
Other recipients of this year’s APWA — Hawai‘i chapter awards include: City and County of Honolulu, McCully-Moiliili fire station, structures category — $2 to $5 million; state Department of Education, Ewa Makai Middle School, structures category — $50 to $100 million; state Department of Transportation, Haleakala Highway widening project, phase two, transportation category — $2 to $10 million; and City and County of Honolulu — Department of Environmental Services, Honouliuli Wastewater Treatment Plant, environment category — $50 to $100 million.
