LIHU‘E — With eight teams still in the mix for Hawai‘i state championships, three semifinal games will kick off today, narrowing the field to just a few precious slots.
The fourth semifinal game will feature the Kaua‘i Red Raiders taking on the ‘Iolani Raiders, scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday at ‘Iolani School on O‘ahu.
The top-seeded ‘Iolani squad was the lone team to knock off the 2009 Kaua‘i team that finished with a 10-1 record and a runner-up in the Division II bracket.
That game, a 24-17 final, featured a Red Raider club that utilized the run-and-shoot. This Kaua‘i team will look to grind out yards on the ground, having become a highly successful wishbone offense.
Kaua‘i picked up a hard-fought 17-13 win over the Kalaheo Mustangs in this past Saturday’s quarterfinal encounter at Vidinha Stadium, limiting the Mustangs’ vaunted running attack. They will need to again employ a stingy defense to overcome a strong passing game, led by sophomore quarterback Reece Foy.
The first Div. II semifinal will see No. 2 seed Lahainaluna take on No. 3 Kaimuki at 7 p.m. tonight at War Memorial Stadium on Maui.
Kaimuki, the O‘ahu Interscholastic Association’s White Division winner, was a 14-9 winner of Kamehameha-Hawai‘i in the quarters on the Big Island.
The Div. I semis will take place at Aloha Stadium on O‘ahu with No. 1 Mililani squaring off with Waianae in the opener at 4 p.m.
Waianae pulled off a 34-16 win over No. 4 seed Kealakehe in Friday’s quarterfinal contest in Waianae. The home team jumped out to a 28-0 lead in the win.
The nightcap will see No. 2 seed Saint Louis take on Leilehua at 7 p.m.
Leilehua knocked off No. 3 seed Baldwin, 35-26, at War Memorial Stadium on Friday.
Div. I games will be broadcast on OC16.
