PO‘IPU — Leo McCarthy was the first finisher at the TriKaua‘i Triathlon series, Sunday, at Po‘ipu Beach Park.
Sponsored by Pu‘uwai Canoe Club, McCarthy finished the 500-meter swim, 14-mile bike ride, and 3.1-mile run in an overall 1:08:22.
JTL Timing Systems, the official event timer, put McCarthy two seconds ahead of John Grout, second overall finisher, in the swim, McCarthy leaving the water on a 7:24 swim over Grout’s 7:26. That margin remained consistent for the remaining two legs as McCarthy completed the bicycle leg at 39:45 and the run at 21:13, keeping the lead for all three segments of the event.
McCarthy was third out of the water, being edged out by Larissa Cottrill (5:56) and Sophie Britzmann (7:12), a strong Swim Kaua‘i Aquatics athlete coming off her first showing at the Senior Swim Championships.
McCarthy continued to close the gap, finishing second in the bike division to JP Lefebvre, a Mixed division cyclist, who stopped the clock at 39:27, just 18 seconds ahead of McCarthy.
He also topped the July event on a 1:09:20 and the November 2009 event on a 1:05:27, that time being 32 seconds faster than his July 2009 first finish of 1:05:59.
Jefferson Oishi filled in the third berth of the Men’s division on a 1:14:23 (9:04, 43:56, 21:23).
Po‘ipu Beach Park veteran lifeguard Roy Yamagata topped the Men 60-69 division on a 1:36:42 event (9:32, 58:12, 28:58).
Heather O’Moore, running in the 20-29 age group, was the first female finisher, crossing the line sixth overall on a 1:16:53. That event time breaks down to an 8:44 swim, 46:52 bike, and 21:17 run.
Mary Castelanelli, another 20-29 participant, crossed eighth overall as the second female finisher on a 1:20:36 (9:14, 49:15, 22:07) followed by Casie Ford stopping the clock at 1:22:45 (7:44, 51:38, 23:23) as the third female finisher and ninth overall.
Ford’ finish was also the first in the 1-19 age group.
The team of David Jackson, Brian Smith and William Stedman topped the relay division on an overall 1:22:59, Jackson completing the swim in 8:19 followed by Smith ending the bike phase at 52:00 and Stedman running at 22:40.
Heather Barth, Pattie Jennings and Cary Hiltsey topped the Women’s Relay division on an overall 1:19:47, Barth doing the swim at 10:48, Jennings bicycling at 42:16 and Hiltsey running at 26:43.
Art Mersberg, Kayla Ishida and Kawai Cernan made up the top Mixed Relay division team, completing the event on a 1:12:10 (8:21, 42:53, 20:56).
Edward Balady topped the 5K Fun Run/Walk on a 23:05 run, or a 7:26 pace, just 35 seconds ahead of Keanu Marias, running in the 13-19 age division.
Dawn McDaniel topped the event in the Female division on a 24:02 run, or a 7:45 pace, just 10 seconds ahead of Lisa Gouveia who stopped the clock at 24:12. Naomi Geddes filled in third place on a 24:40 run.
