LIHU‘E — Tyren Kaneshige’s foot pushed the Kalaheo Scrubs into the championship game, Wednesday.
Kaneshige, who earlier netted a goal to force the playoff, fired the winning goal as the Scrubs took a 4-3 edge over the Warriors in a shootout at the Will Veeck soccer tournament played at the Vidinha Stadium complex.
Earlier in the afternoon, the Girls 12 Under bracket was settled when the Lihu‘e Strikers took a 1-0 victory over the Lihu‘e Blue Bunnies, a championship game played at the Vidinha Stadium field.
This was a reversal of the American Youth Soccer Organization, Region 940 G12U championships when Macy Tamura led the Blue Bunnies to the title with two goals.
Logan Fredericksen paced the Northshore boys to a 13-3 win over Hanapepe, No. 2 seed from Region 940, in one of three games played Wednesday at the North Vidinha fields.
Following Fredericksen, Keale Lee had a hat trick (three goals), Tyler Barton and Justin Franklin each netted two goals and one goal apiece from Sean Valin and Matthew Schmidt rounded out the win for the Region 941 top seed that was blessed with passing showers preceded by a strong rainbow painted against the backdrop of black clouds from the impending rain.
Hanapepe, holding tough in its No. 2 spot, never gave up and its effort was paid off when Riley Saiki was able to fire off two goals and Haku Barriga netted one.
Kaneshige and the Kalaheo Scrubs put on a good show against the Warriors in the third game, Wednesday, drawing on their depth to work the field against an equally tenacious Warrior squad.
That ignited the fans from both teams as they cheered the good play that was punctuated by strong plays from Cody Palmer, goalkeeper for the Warriors, and Trevor Freudig, goalie for the Scrubs.
Joining Kaneshige in scoring, Justin Garma, strong forward, and Braden Antonio each netted goals to force the shootout.
Jonah Stokes and Paul Oyama had the scores for the Warriors with Freudig making the winning save.
The Will Veeck tournament wraps up today with three championship games.
Northshore, the No. 1 seed from Region 941, meet up with the Kalaheo Scrubs, the No. 1 seed from Region 940 in the stadium.
The Lihu‘e Jets and Wailua Dynamites battle for the Girls 14 Under title, and in the third match, the Hanalei Warriors will be featured in a Boys 12 Under title game.
