KIPU — A 26-year-old man from Kane‘ohe, O‘ahu, apparently drowned at Kipu Falls at around 5:50 p.m. Friday, a county news release states.
The man reportedly was attempting to swim back to the edge of the pond after diving off the falls when he encountered difficulty, the release states. He then went underwater and did not surface.
A friend of the victim dove into the water and tried to locate the man, but was unsuccessful.
Three rescue specialists and four firefighters from the Lihu‘e station responded to the scene along with medics, a battalion chief, and four police officers.
Two of the firefighters entered the water and found the victim on the bottom of the pond, the release states. They brought the man out of the water and initiated CPR.
The medics continued CPR until they arrived at Wilcox Memorial Hospital where the man was pronounced dead.
