Elfrieda Hamano
Elfrieda Akano Hamano of Koloa died on her 94th birthday on Nov. 21, 2010, at Hale Kupuna. Born on Nov. 21, 1916, in Koloa, she retired from the Department of Education.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband John Hamano.
She is survived by daughters Lynette(Carlos) Buhk of Koloa, Helen (Joel) Morris of Santa Rosa, Calif.; grandchildren Ryan (Monica) Buhk of Koloa, Laina (Jake) Maniscalco of Sunnyvale, Calif., John (Denise) Morris of Alameda, Calif., Jay (Adriana) Morris of Oakland, Calif., Joellyn Morris of San Fransisco, Calif.; great-grandchildren Nicholas and Jordan Fregosi, Kendall, Kaleinani, and Makena Buhk, Giselle and Julian Morris; sisters-in-law Kunie Kiyabu, Harue Chinen; brother-in-law William Sasaki; beloved niece Elethia Okuno; devoted hanai family Don and Trudy Schoenfeld; many nieces and nephews.

Gary Blaich
Gary Loomis Blaich, M.D., of Kilauea, died at home on Nov. 25, 2010.
Born April 23, 1946, in Honolulu, he enjoyed working as a psychiatrist in the state mental health system and in private practice on Kaua‘i for over 30 years.
As president of the Kaua‘i Public Land Trust, he led conservation of over 175 acres of coastal lands.
He was preceded in death by parents Alice and Norman Blaich; sister Diane Anderson; and brother-in-law Cliff Bailey.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Beryl; daughters Mehana (Kilipaki) Vaughan, and Meleana (Will) Estes; grandchildren Pikomanawakpono and Pi‘ina‘emalina; mother-in-law Amelia (Jim Beatty) Bailey; brothers- and sisters-in-law Don Anderson, Jim, Fahy, Speedy (Pauline), and John (Karla) Bailey; nieces Britten, Lindsey and Brooke (Johnny) Bailey, Nicole (Bobby) Galchutt; and nephews Camm (Janene) Willener, Kaulana Bailey, and Michael Coots.
A memorial celebration will be held on Saturday, Dec. 11, at his family home at 2868 F Kalihiwai Road (on the dirt road to Kauape‘a Beach) at 11 a.m., with visitation from 9:30. Carpool recommended. Look for parking signs and shuttle.
In lieu of wreaths, the family welcomes lei and donations to Gary’s favorite charities: the Kaua‘i Public Land Trust, the Kaua‘i Food Bank and the Honolulu Art Academy.
Eteru Pili Jr.
Eteru Pili Jr. of Hanama‘ulu, Kaua‘i and Waipahu, O‘ahu died Nov. 23, 2010, at his residence at age 72. Born Dec. 22, 1937, in Utulei, American Samoa, he was an estimator for Aloha International Moving Services.
He was preceded in death by parents Eteru and Lafaaua Pili Sr.; sister Lafaaua ‘Titi’ Ulfale; brothers Teetai, Ane, and Olasa ‘Pea’ Pili.
He is survived by wife Sandra Pili; sons Gilbert ‘Butch’ Pili, Adam (Lisa) Pili, Craig Pili, Darrell ‘Scott’ (Sophie) Pili, Leslie ‘Quentin’ Pili, Anthony ‘Tony’ Pili; daughters Jordan Pili, Debra Pili; sister Martha ‘Mafa’ (Pasi) Iafeta of O‘ahu; brothers Vasenga (Lavern) Pili of O‘ahu, David (Leatrice) Pili of O‘ahu, Tolopa ‘Toi’ (Casssie) Pili of California; 14 grandchildren; and two grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday, Dec. 11, at St. Lukes Church in Honolulu with visitation at 9 a.m., service at 10 a.m. and lunch to follow.
Family suggests casual attire and no flowers.
