The Waimea High School cheer squad finished third in the Large Division at the 10th annual Zippy’s Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association State Championships, Sunday at the Stan Sheriff Center at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa.
Waimea’s squad, the reigning Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation champions, accumulated 286.5 points, just a point ahead of Kapolei (285.5) and two points ahead of Pac-Five (284.5).
Pearl City (235.5), Kamehameha-Maui (232) and Kalaheo (229.5) high schools rounded out the Large Division winners.
Kamehameha Schools captured the top spot in the Large Division by a scant two points over second place finisher, the Mililani Trojans. The Warrior cheer squad finished with 330.5 points for its fourth consecutive Large Division title. Mililani finished with 328.5 points.
Large Division squads consist of teams with 11 or more cheerleaders.
Radford High School topped the Medium division, a squad with 10 or less members, by accumulating 326 points, less than 10 points ahead of second place finisher Moanalua High School (316.5).
Kaiser (308), Waiakea (286), Punahou (284.5), Leilehua (282.5), Baldwin (273.5), ‘Aiea (251.5), and Kealakehe (242) rounded out the leaders for the Medium Division.
