The Huangs, regular vendors at both the county’s Sunshine Markets and the Kaua‘i Community Market (a partnership with Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau and Kaua‘i Community College) will be joined by vendors from the county’s Kaua‘i Made program this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the KCC campus in Puhi.
“This is a first-ever celebration of local eating, merry-making and gift-giving all on the front lawn of KCC,” said Melissa McFerrin, Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau executive administrator.
In addition to the fresh produce and value-added products available at the weekly Kaua‘i Community Market, McFerrin said a wide range of Kaua‘i Made and Kaua‘i Grown foods including coffee, honey, cheeses, jams, pies, dips, spreads, spices, dressings and more will be available.
These will be supplemented by unique Kaua‘i Made gifts including jewelry, clothing, photography and other crafted products.
The event will also feature local foods, samples and holiday treats to enjoy for breakfast or lunch and an entertainment lineup is planned.
Four KCC second-year culinary arts students who earned a gold and three bronze medals during last week’s American Culinary Federation-sanctioned Culinary Student Salon and Culinary Expo will be demonstrating some of their award-winning dishes with free samples, said Chef Martina Hilldorfer of the KCC culinary arts program.
Mac Alop captured gold with a score of 37.5 points out of a possible 40 points with his “orange-miso marinated opaka on ara imo, oriental mushrooms and baby bok choy, served with a snapper fumet.”
Karen Ramento entered the six individual plated desserts category, finishing with a bronze medal. R.J. Udaundo medaled bronze with his “roulade of snapper with caviar butter and mushroom ragout,” and a “coffee-rubbed rack of lamb with a phyllo Napoleon and Mediterranean salad” also earned a bronze medal.
Hilldorfer said these student chefs will be on the line starting at 10 a.m.
Additionally, the KCC culinary arts program will offer two coffee drinks to raise funds for student competitions like the one the students attended last week.
McFerrin said this is the last market at KCC before it closes for Christmas and New Year’s, both holidays falling on Saturday. The market will re-open on Jan. 8.
She said shoppers can also visit the Kaua‘i Culinary Market at the Kukui‘ula Village on Wednesdays from 4 to 6 p.m.
