KAPA‘A — Ciara Caires found the net with less than a minute peeled off the clock, Thursday.
But that was Kaua‘i’s moment of the game as the Kapa‘a junior varsity wahine answered with four goals en route to a 4-1 win at the New Kapa‘a Town Park stadium.
Earlier in the day, Edsel Lactaotao led the Warrior JV men to a 5-0 dominant win over the Kaua‘i redshirts. Kapa‘a had the ball in control with a 3-0 halftime lead before icing the victory with two second-half nets.
Jayme Knapp scored the only goal at Hanapepe Stadium as the Waimea girls JV edged Island School, 1-0 in an exhibition match.
Lactaotao, seen on the Warrior gridiron as one of its kick return specialists, brought those skills to the soccer field, netting two goals to lead the Kapa‘a JV team.
Mike Alonzo, Jonathan Paleka and Raiatea Oliver each added goals in the victory. Daniel Alonzo drew a caution on one of his defensive moves.
Kaua‘i’s Caires found her net early, but the Raiders succumbed to the height and speed of the Kapa‘a JV girls.
Although Kapa‘a recorded four goals in the win, the Warrior wahine had opportunities for several more, one shot in the first half bouncing off the post and in the second half, a similar play kept the ball in play outside the goalmouth.
Fast-moving forward Chloe Fredericksen set the pace for Kapa‘a, who managed a 2-1 halftime lead. Fredericksen led the Kapa‘a scoring with two goals with Ashlie Overmyer and Maddisson Hinkel each adding one.
Kapa‘a JV women charged back from the half and found the net early for the 3-1 lead, before breaking a defensive exchange on a breakaway play that scored at near point-blank range on the left side of the goalmouth.
With the sweep, Kapa‘a travels to Hanapepe Stadium today where the JV boys take on the Menehune starting at 10 a.m. The JV girls take the field starting at 11:45 a.m.
Kaua‘i JV will be at Island School for an exhibition match starting at noon.
